Story

In this variant of the Phantom of the Opera story, our protagonist is not a disfigured individual but an orphan raised by rats in the sewers beneath the Paris Opera. He develops an affinity for these creatures and becomes known as the Phantom. When anyone dares to harm his beloved rats, the Phantom invokes death upon them. The primary antagonist is the chief exterminator who invents a rat-catching machine, leading to conflict with the Phantom.

Summary

Il Fantasma dell'Opera (1998) directed by Dario Argento presents an unconventional take on the classic Phantom of the Opera tale. Set in Paris, the film deviates from the standard narrative by depicting the Phantom not as a disfigured individual but as an orphan raised and protected by rats within the opera house's sewers. This unique premise serves as the foundation for the story, which revolves around the Phantom's vengeful quest to protect his rodent companions against the chief exterminator's rat-catching machine.
