Rena Murakami began her career as a gravure idol before debuting in adult videos (AV) in 1988. She also appeared in mainstream dramas like 'Koiko no mainichi' and 'Shin dōtei monogatari: Hong Kong virgin boy'. Her popularity led to roles in Category III films in Hong Kong, including the cult favorite 'Sex and Zen' in 1991. Murakami faced a minor scandal when it was rumored she had sexual encounters with the Sultan of Brunei during his visit to Japan in 1993. In the late 1990s, she toured strip theaters around Japan. She produced and starred in the pink film 'Murakami Rena: kyūkyoku meigizuma' in 1997. After a small role in 'Serial Dad' in 2008, Murakami became a radio personality on a talk show in Osaka since 2018.
