Born Norma Jeane Mortenson in Los Angeles on June 1, 1926, Marilyn Monroe spent her childhood in foster homes and married at age sixteen. She started as a pin-up model during WWII before signing film contracts with Fox and Columbia. After initial minor roles, she became popular with films like 'Niagara', 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes', and 'How to Marry a Millionaire'. Despite scandals and typecasting, Monroe was one of Hollywood's most marketable stars by the mid-1950s. She founded her own production company in 1954, studied method acting, and won a Golden Globe for 'Some Like It Hot'. Her last film was 'The Misfits' (1961). Despite never receiving an Oscar nomination, she remains a pop culture icon.
