María Telón, born María Mercedes Telón de la Cruz, is a young Mayan woman of Kaqchikel ethnicity who grew up on the slopes of an active volcano in Guatemala. At age seventeen, she faced an arranged marriage, but her betrothed had to first work in the city, exposing María to unfamiliar urban surroundings due to unforeseen complications.
