Ex-cop turned private detective Choucas (Alain Delon) investigates the disappearance of Marthe Pigot, a blind young woman who worked at the Drillard Foundation. He's hired by her mother Isabelle but warned off the case by Inspector Coccioli. Despite this, Choucas continues his investigation. During a meeting with Isabelle in a square, she is shot dead. Chief Inspector Madrier attempts to kill Choucas but fails and is killed in self-defense. Two criminals abduct Choucas but he escapes. He meets his secret partner, retired Chief of Police Haymann, and Charlotte, where they reveal a narcotics angle to the case.
