Laura Elizabeth Dern was born on February 10, 1967 to actors Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd. She began her acting career in the 1980s, gaining prominence for roles in Mask (1985), Blue Velvet (1986), and Wild at Heart (1990). In Wild at Heart, she played Lula Fortune Pentothal alongside Nicolas Cage as Sailor Ripley. She has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including an Academy Award, Primetime Emmy Awards, and Golden Globe Awards.

In the early 1930s, during the Great Depression in Georgia, the Hillyer family takes in Rose, a sexually liberated young woman who is at risk of falling into prostitution.
