Julianne Moore (born Julie Anne Smith on December 3, 1960) is an American actress and children's author. Born to a British family, she spent her early life between Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and Greenock, Scotland. Moore began acting in television after studying theatre at Boston University. She gained prominence for her roles in soap operas like 'As the World Turns' (1985-1988), earning a Daytime Emmy Award. Her breakthrough came with Robert Altman's 'Short Cuts' (1993) and Todd Haynes' 'Safe' (1995).
