Mary Ann returns to San Francisco after some time away and reunites with her eclectic group of friends who live in Anna Madrigal's boardinghouse-turned-apartment complex at 28 Barbary Lane. The story, titled 'Tales of the City,' primarily focuses on these inhabitants who form a tight-knit community, or what Maupin refers to as a 'logical family.' Unlike previous adaptations, Mrs. Madrigal's transgender identity is openly acknowledged and embraced by all.
