Story

The story unfolds in three interconnected time periods: 1913, 1936, and 2001. In present-day 2001, Louis, a seventy-eight-year-old man, returns to his childhood seaside resort where he encounters Olivia, a nineteen-year-old girl in love with a violent cad. Louis shares two stories from the past to help Olivia understand her feelings.

In one tale set in 1936, Louis's mother engages in a passionate affair with an Italian tennis instructor, causing emotional turmoil for young Louis. In another story from 1913, Marie Collins Brown, a slightly older widow, recounts her own fleeting yet intense romance with a Polish gambler during the course of just one day.

The connections between these stories and their relevance to Olivia's situation are not explicitly detailed in the provided sources.
