At Oxford University, mathematics PhD student Martin (Elijah Wood) idolizes and hopes to meet his mentor, Professor Arthur Seldom (Sir John Hurt). He lodges with Mrs. Eagleton (Anna Massey), a friend of Seldom's, but finds her haughty and unsympathetic towards him and her daughter Beth (Julle Cox).
