Mildred Pierce begins during the Great Depression in Glendale, California, with Mildred Pierce, a young mother of two daughters, Veda and Ray. After throwing her husband Bert out for his infidelity, Mildred finds herself a 'grass widow,' struggling to provide for her family. She turns to baking and job hunting, feeling that she's above the menial work available at an employment agency. Meanwhile, she begins an affair with Wally Burgan, an ex-business partner of her husband's, following dating advice from her neighbor Lucy Gessler. After a brief encounter with a wealthy socialite who offers her a housekeeping job, Mildred ends up at Cristofor's Café where Ida, the waitress, plays a role in shaping her future. Throughout the series, Mildred opens a restaurant, falls in love, and continues to strive for her daughter Veda's respect, despite Veda's narcissism.
Mildred Pierce is a five-part miniseries directed by Todd Haynes, based on James M. Cain's 1941 novel of the same name. Set during the Great Depression in California, it explores themes of family dynamics, women's independence, and social mobility through the lens of Mildred's struggles as a single mother and businesswoman. The series is notable for its period-accurate production design and its exploration of women's agency and power amidst societal challenges.
