Coleman Silk (Anthony Hopkins), a respected literature professor at Athena College, unwittingly makes a racial slur during a lecture, which leads to his dismissal despite his claims that he was referring to a visible stain on a student's dress. To clear his name and regain his reputation, Coleman writes a book about the events with his friend and colleague Nathan Zuckerman (Gary Sinise), who discovers a long-buried secret from Coleman's past while helping him write the book.
Human Stain is a 2003 film directed by Robert Benton, based on Philip Roth's novel of the same name. The movie explores themes of race relations, identity, and the human capacity for reinvention through its protagonist Coleman Silk, who passes as white despite being African American. Coleman's past as a 'black' man in America is revealed to Nathan Zuckerman during their collaboration on the book, challenging Coleman's understanding of his own identity and the complex dynamics of race and prejudice.
