Danish actress Birgitte Hjort Sørensen was born on January 16, 1982, in Hillerød and raised in Birkerød. Inspired by a West End performance of Chicago during her school years, she pursued acting. Sørensen graduated from the Danish National School of Performing Arts and made her debut in 'The Eagle' (2005). She later played Roxie Hart in productions of Chicago in Copenhagen and London's West End. Sørensen gained significant recognition for her role as journalist Katrine Fønsmark in the political drama series 'Borgen' (2010-2013).

In early 20th-century Denmark, Marie and her husband P.S. Krøyer, a renowned painter, are celebrated as one of the country's most admired couples. However, their seemingly perfect life hides a dark reality: Krøyer suffers from manic depression and syphilis, leading to unpredictable outbursts that take a toll on Marie and their daughter Vibeke. Struggling to maintain appearances, Marie decides to leave Denmark with Vibeke for Italy following one of Krøyer's violent episodes. In Italy, she meets Swedish composer Hugo Alfvén, with whom she begins a relationship while grappling with her feelings for Krøyer.
