The film begins in the early 1980s with Martin Asher pushing his friend Matt Soulsby into the path of a truck, killing him and taking on his identity. Twenty years later, FBI profiler Illeana Scott arrives in Montreal to assist local police in tracking down the serial killer who has been assuming the identities of his victims. Scott's most promising lead is James Costa, a museum employee who might be the killer's only eyewitness. Meanwhile, Martin, now living as one of his victim's identities, becomes aware of the investigation and begins to manipulate events to evade capture.
