Marion Crane steals $40,000 from her employer and sets out to meet her boyfriend, Sam Loomis, in California. Along the way, she stops at the Bates Motel due to a storm. The motel's owner, Norman Bates, invites her to eat dinner with him after she arrives late in the evening. During their conversation, Marion confesses that she has stolen the money. After leaving Norman to take a shower, she is stabbed multiple times by an unseen assailant. Meanwhile, Marion's sister, Lila Crane, and her boyfriend, Sam Loomis, become concerned when they don't hear from Marion. They hire private investigator Milton Arbogast to find her. He checks into the Bates Motel but goes missing. Lila and Sam discover that Marion's car has been found near the motel, leading them to believe she is being held captive there. They search the motel and Norman's house, discovering a decomposed body in the fruit cellar. Norman appears and kills both Lila and Sam, but not before Lila discovers his secret: he has been dressed as his mother, whom he killed years ago when she planned to marry a man other than him.
