Céline and Julie, two young women who barely know each other, meet by chance while attempting to rent the same apartment. They soon become friends and decide to explore Paris together. However, their daily lives begin to intersect with a mysterious boudoir melodrama that unfolds in an eerily parallel reality. This hallucinatory experience binds them together and challenges their understanding of reality.
Directed by French New Wave filmmaker Jacques Rivette, 'Céline et Julie vont en bateau: Phantom Ladies Over Paris' (1974) is a surrealist comedy-drama that explores themes of female friendship, identity, and the blurred lines between reality and illusion. The film follows Céline and Julie as they navigate their way through a labyrinthine narrative that incorporates elements of dream logic and magical realism.
