Joanna Shimkus Poitier, born October 30, 1943, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Joseph Shimkus (Lithuanian-Jewish) and Marie Petrie (Catholic Irish), moved to Montreal at a young age. After attending convent school, she left for Paris at 19, becoming a fashion model. She debuted in 'De l'amour' (1964), followed by roles in 'Les aventuriers' (1967), 'Tante Zita' (1968), 'Boom!' (1968), and 'The Lost Man' (1969). After marrying Sidney Poitier in 1976, she retired from acting. They have two daughters, Anika and Sydney Tamiia Poitier, who is also an actress.
