In Edinburgh, Scotland, three friends - David (Ewan McGregor), Juliet (Kerry Fox), and Alex (Christopher Eccleston) - interview and select a new flatmate named Hugo. Shortly after he moves in, they discover him dead from an apparent drug overdose in his room. Rather than reporting it to the police, they decide to hide the body and keep a large sum of cash they find hidden in his room. However, as days pass, their friendship begins to disintegrate due to paranoia and suspicion over who might have taken some of the money missing from their stash. The situation becomes even more dire when it's revealed that Hugo was involved with some dangerous people who are now searching for him and his money.
Directed by Danny Boyle in 1994, 'Shallow Grave' is a British black comedy thriller set against the backdrop of Edinburgh's drug scene. The film explores themes of greed, distrust, and the exploitation of friendship as it follows David, Juliet, and Alex after they discover their new roommate dead with a substantial amount of cash. As they keep the money and hide Hugo's body to avoid police involvement, their initial camaraderie turns into suspicion and paranoia, leading them down a dark path filled with tense confrontations.
