In 1975, she became Playmate of the Month for 'Playboy'. Owens acted in several films shot in New Orleans during this period, including 'Mandingo', 'Hard Times', and 'French Quarter'. After her divorce from her first husband Eddie, a police officer, Owens moved to Miami and then Denver, where she married Joe Watt. She worked as a reporter for 'The Miami Herald' and 'The Rocky Mountain News'. In 1997, under the name Laura Watt, she published her first novel, 'Carry Me Back'.
