Story

The story unfolds in Danzig during the years leading up to and during World War II. Oskar Matzerath, the son of a local dealer, exhibits unusual intelligence from birth. On his third birthday, he decides not to grow physically as he witnesses the madness unfolding around him on the eve of war. He chooses to remain at this age, using his tin drum as a symbol of protest against societal norms represented by his middle-class family and neighborhood.
