She is best known for her role as Maria Braun in 'The Marriage of Maria Braun' (1979), earning her the Silver Bear award at the Berlin Film Festival. Over a span of 12 years, she appeared in 23 films directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder.

Story

The film follows Franz, a small-time pimp who refuses to join a criminal syndicate. As a result, Bruno, a gangster sent by the syndicate, arrives to eliminate him. However, an unusual friendship develops between Franz and Bruno. They become so close that they even share Franz's mistress Joanna. Initially content with this arrangement, Joanna later becomes bored of Bruno's presence.
