In 'Je vous salue, Marie', Mary (Marie) is a student and basketball player who works at her father's petrol station. Joseph (Jean-Luc), an earnest dropout, drives a cab. When Mary becomes pregnant, she struggles to accept it, especially since she's not sexually active. The angel Gabriel appears to Joseph in his taxi mirror, instructing him to marry Mary and accept the child as God's will. Meanwhile, Mary meditates on her situation, expressing anger and accepting her fate amidst natural imagery like sun, moon, clouds, flowers, and water. Interspersed is a parallel story of Eva and her lover, whose adulterous affair offers philosophical discussions but no resolution.
'Je vous salue, Marie' is Jean-Luc Godard's modern retelling of the Virgin Birth narrative. It follows Mary (Marie), a student athlete working at her father's petrol station, who becomes inexplicably pregnant. The film intercuts this story with that of Eva and her lover, exploring themes of faith, destiny, and the human struggle to understand divine purpose. Godard uses his signature cinematic style, blending narrative and philosophical elements with striking visuals. Despite its religious underpinnings, 'Je vous salue, Marie' is a film about questioning and accepting one's fate in life.
