Story

In 'Drowning by Numbers', three generations of women in Suffolk, England conspire to murder their husbands and get away with it. The mother, Cissie Colpitts (Joanne Whalley), tired of her husband's infidelity, drowns him with the help of the local coroner, Alfred Moss (John Hannah). They cover up the murder as an accident. Inspired by their mother, Cissie's two daughters, Morax and Zeta (Juliet Stevenson and Geraldine James respectively), also decide to eliminate their husbands in similar fashion, involving Moss in their crimes. As the story progresses, numbers appear visually and audibly in the scenes, counting from one to one hundred, which is unexplained but presumably connected to the drownings.

Summary

'Drowning by Numbers', a dark comedy directed by Peter Greenaway in 1988, is set in Suffolk, England. The film revolves around three generations of women who share a peculiar solidarity - they all seek to murder their husbands and make it look like an accident, particularly through drowning. This shared behavior leads to copy-cat drownings, involving the reluctant coroner Alfred Moss. Despite its humorous tone, the film is a exploration of dark themes such as infidelity, revenge, and the desperate measures women might take when pushed to their limits.
