Ángel de fuego tells the story of Alma, a young trapeze artist in an impoverished circus in Mexico City. She lives with her father Renato, an old and sick clown, and they share a complex relationship as she is his daughter but also the mother of his child. After Renato's death, Alma is expelled from the circus for refusing to abandon her son. She ends up on the streets where she meets a group of itinerant puppeteers led by Refugio, who preach the word of God. Seeing in them a promise and hoping for redemption, Alma joins them. However, despite undergoing a purification ceremony, Alma is eventually stripped of her faith and innocence.
Ángel de fuego is a 1992 Mexican drama film directed by Dana Rotberg, notable as one of the few films from Mexico's 'New Wave' directed by a woman. The story revolves around Alma, a young trapeze artist in a struggling circus, and her complicated relationship with her father, Renato, a sick clown. After being expelled from the circus, Alma joins an itinerant group of puppeteers who preach the word of God. The film explores themes of faith, redemption, and innocence lost. Although plot details vary slightly between sources, they agree that it's a story of desperation, hope, and ultimately, disillusionment.
