Story

Veteran actress Maria Enders is invited by playwright Wilhelm Melchior to participate in a revival of their successful play 'Maloja Snake' twenty years after its debut. Initially reluctant due to personal reasons, including her ongoing divorce and memories of co-star Susan Rosenberg's suicide following the original production, she agrees when Wilhelm suddenly passes away. Maria arrives at Wilhelm's mountain retreat in Sils Maria with her American personal assistant Valentine, where she begins rehearsing for the play alongside nineteen-year-old actress Jo-Ann Ellis, who will portray the role of Sigrid that Maria originally played. Throughout the rehearsal process, Maria struggles with her feelings about playing Helena, the older character who had been dependent on Sigrid, and finds herself relating to Valentine more as their relationship deepens.

Summary

Clouds of Sils Maria is a 2014 drama directed by Olivier Assayas that explores themes of aging, gender ideals, and professional relationships. The film centers around veteran French actress Maria Enders (played by Juliette Binoche), who is invited to participate in the revival of 'Maloja Snake', a play that launched her career two decades ago.
