Story

In 1950s Nevada, repressed English literature professor Vivian Bell travels to Reno to obtain a quick divorce. She stays at a ranch owned by Frances and Frank Martin, who are preparing their daughter Cay Rivers for her upcoming marriage. Vivian feels out of place in the rural setting but is drawn to Cay's carefree and spirited nature. As they spend more time together, Vivian finds herself unexpectedly attracted to Cay, releasing emotions she has long repressed. Cay, who is already involved with another woman named Silver, is initially confused by her feelings for Vivian. However, as their intimacy grows, Cay begins to understand her true desires. Vivian's insecurities about her feelings and the possibility of a relationship with Cay are explored against the backdrop of the rocky desert landscapes and country-western music that surround them.

Summary

Directed by Donna Deitch and released in 1985, 'Desert Hearts' is a poignant drama that explores themes of lesbian love and self-discovery during the repressed 1950s. The film is based on Jane Rule's novel ' Desert of the Heart', set in Reno, Nevada, where divorce was quick and legal. It follows Vivian Bell, an English professor seeking a divorce, who becomes involved with Cay Rivers, the spirited daughter of the ranch owners where she stays. The movie is notable for its sensitive portrayal of lesbian relationships at a time when such representations were rare in mainstream cinema.
