In early 20th century Paris, notorious bachelor Henri Gauthier-Villars (Willy) marries young country girl Gabrielle Colette. Willy introduces her to Parisian life and encourages her to write about her experiences. He publishes these writings under his pen-name 'Willy', claiming them as his own. Gabrielle keeps a diary of her experiences, which include becoming involved in a threesome with Willy and another woman, Polaire. Eventually, Gabrielle grows tired of Willy's deception and decides to publish her books under her own name 'Colette'.
Becoming Colette (1991) is a biographical drama directed by Danny Huston, set at the turn of the 20th century in France. The film explores the early life of French writer Gabrielle Colette and her relationship with her husband Henri Gauthier-Villars ('Willy'), who publishes her erotic writings under his own name. The movie delves into themes of identity, creativity, and empowerment as Colette navigates her journey from a country wife to an established author in her own right.
