Synopsis
Twenty-one year old Sammy Smalls struggles with self-esteem issues due to her frumpy clothes and a childhood illness that left her with a slight limp. Working as an undercover shoplifter detector at Big Apple Food Town, she has little success with men despite having a crush on busker musician Eugene Zaslavsky. After a disastrous sexual encounter with him, Sammy decides to gain more experience to improve her self-image and prove herself to Eugene. She embarks on a journey of self-discovery, seeking advice and sexual encounters from various sources. Meanwhile, Eugene must confront his own self-image issues before he can be a true friend and potentially more to Sammy.

Year of the Carnivore (2009) is a comedic-drama directed by Sook-Yin Lee that explores themes of self-discovery, sexual identity, and personal growth.
