Synopsis
Waterland follows Tom Crick (Jeremy Irons), a high school history teacher who is going through a crisis of confidence due to his wife's affair with one of his students. To cope with this mental anguish, he decides to narrate his life story to his class, interweaving it with the history of three generations of his family from Norfolk, England. As he delves into his family's past, including the story of his grandfather who died in a drowning accident and his grandmother who was accused of witchcraft, Tom begins to understand his own actions and those of his wife, Helen (Eleanor Bron). Through this process of self-reflection, Tom hopes to find redemption and acceptance.

Résumé
Waterland is a drama based on Graham Swift's novel of the same name. Directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal in 1992, it explores themes of memory, family history, and personal redemption through the story of a troubled high school history teacher. Set primarily in the Norfolk marshlands of England during the late 1970s, the film interweaves the present-day narrative with historical events and folklore from three generations of Tom Crick's family. The movie was shot on location in Norfolk and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
