Synopsis
In 'Walkabout', a geologist takes his teenage daughter and young son into the Australian outback under the guise of a picnic. However, he intends to abandon them there after shooting himself, an attempt at suicide that fails. The siblings are left stranded alone in the wilderness with only their clothes, some non-perishable food, a transistor radio, and a picnic cloth. They encounter an Aboriginal boy on his walkabout, a rite of passage into manhood where he lives off the land for months. Despite the language barrier, the Australian boy helps them survive in the harsh outback conditions. The girl begins to develop feelings for the Aboriginal boy, while her brother observes their interactions. The film explores themes of survival, communication, and the contrast between modern life and nature.
