Synopsis
In 'Red Joan', we meet Joan Stanley (Dame Judi Dench) in present-day London, where she leads a quiet life until her arrest by British Intelligence Service in May 2000. The story then flashes back to the mid-1930s when young Joan, a physics student at Cambridge University, becomes sympathetic to communism due to the influence of her professor and fellow student, Sonya (Tereza Srbova). She later works as a civil servant for the British government where she gets recruited by the KGB. Throughout the decades, Joan successfully transfers nuclear bomb secrets to Soviet Russia while remaining undetected as a spy.

Résumé
'Red Joan' is a 2018 historical drama film directed by Trevor Nunn, based on the novel 'Joan of Arc' by Jenni Kowalski. The movie focuses on the true story of English-born Joan Stanley, who becomes a Soviet and Communist Party sympathizer during her time at Cambridge University in the 1930s. After World War II, she works as a British government civil servant while also secretly transferring atomic bomb secrets to Soviet Russia. Despite being caught and arrested more than half a century later, Joan remains undetected as a spy for most of her life.
