Synopsis
Madame Bovary (2000), an adaptation of Gustave Flaubert's classic novel, follows Emma Bovary, a young woman with romantic ideals and aspirations beyond her provincial life. She marries Charles Bovary, a kind but dull country doctor who dotes on her. However, Emma soon grows discontent with her marriage and begins an affair with a local law student, Léon. When Léon refuses to elope with her, Emma takes up with another lover, Rodolphe, while still pursuing Léon. Emma's lavish spending on clothing and furnishings leads her into debt, which she tries to hide from Charles. She even gives him false professional advice regarding a patient, leading to his ruin.
