Synopsis
The movie 'Linhas de Wellington' (2012) is set during the Napoleonic Wars in Portugal in 1810. After a victory over French forces at the Battle of Buçaco, the Anglo-Portuguese army commanded by Marshal Massena retreats to avoid being overwhelmed numerically. As they retreat, they organize the evacuation of civilians and destroy supplies to deny them to the French. The story follows various characters from different walks of life—soldiers and civilians alike—as they journey towards the fortified lines of Torres Vedras. Along the way, they face persecution by the French, harsh weather conditions, and a landscape devastated by war. Among the key characters are Lieutenant Pedro De Alencar, who is idealistic; Clarissa Warren, an English girl; Penabranca, a shady dealer; Sergeant Francisco Xavier, who seeks vengeance; and Martírio, a lustful prostitute. All of these characters converge towards Torres Vedras where the final battle will determine their fate.
