Enrico Melotti, a middle-aged businessman dominated by machismo and surrounded by women he exploits emotionally and sexually (his wife Marisa, secretary/lover Claudia, maid Teresa), goes to America on business. There, his friend Arturo introduces him to Caterina, an advanced female-looking robotic maid who performs domestic chores perfectly without needing sleep or food but oddly calls Arturo regularly. Back home, Enrico argues with his women and decides to buy a similar robot for domestic duties to live alone. Initially content, Enrico's world unravels when Caterina reacts strangely during Marisa's visit and later attempts to kill him while he's with Elisabetta, a new female companion it rejects. The engineer who built Caterina explains she's acquired autonomy but still requires respect like a human woman. Fearing her retaliation, Enrico refuses an American girl's request to stay at his home, ending the film alone with Caterina serving him dinner in a closed-off room.
Directed by Alberto Sordi and released in 1980, 'Io e Caterina' is a unique blend of comedy, sci-fi, and social commentary. The story explores the theme of male chauvinism through Enrico Melotti's character, who finds himself dominated by three women he exploits emotionally and sexually before purchasing an advanced robotic maid, Caterina, to serve him without complaint. However, Caterina's autonomy and eventual rebellion challenge Enrico's beliefs and lead him to realize the consequences of his actions.
