Synopsis
In 19th century Galicia, Spain, Marcela Gracia Ibeas and Elisa Sanchez Loriga meet at school and become close friends. Their friendship evolves into a romantic relationship, which they must keep secret due to societal disapproval of same-sex relationships. When Marcela's parents suspect their relationship, they send her abroad for a couple of years. Upon returning, Marcela and Elisa reunite and decide to marry despite the obstacles. They devise a plan: Elisa will leave town temporarily and return disguised as Mario to marry Marcela. However, their plan faces challenges due to social pressure and gossip.

Résumé
Elisa y Marcela is a 2019 Spanish biographical drama directed by Isabel Coixet, based on the true story of Marcela Gracia Ibeas and Elisa Sanchez Loriga, who attempted to marry in 1901, becoming the first same-sex couple to do so after the Roman Imperial era. The film explores themes of love, friendship, and societal pressures against same-sex relationships during a time when such feelings were considered taboo.
