Synopsis

Die Braut explores the tumultuous relationship between Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the renowned German writer, and Christiane Vulpius, a village girl with whom he shared an instantaneous and fiery passion. The two lived together for 28 years, with Christiane suffering numerous insults and humiliations due to their unconventional living arrangement. For instance, she was forced to 'disappear' into the servants' quarters during official occasions and faced resentment from Goethe's social circle, including his former favorite Charlotte von Stein who plotted against her. Despite these hardships, Christiane remained devoted to Goethe, even after he married her when she saved his life during an attack by Napoleonic soldiers. However, this new status did not spare her from open attacks by jealous society figures, with Goethe proving only half-hearted in defending her. Meanwhile, Christiane finds solace in the attentions of youthful admirers.
