After naming a coworker as the suspect and returning home, Gold learns that one of Gonzalez's customers was found dead, prompting him to return to Shanghai to complete the investigation. Résumé

Code 46 (2003), directed by Michael Winterbottom, is an arthouse science fiction film set in a dystopian future where cities are heavily controlled and accessible only through checkpoints. People require 'papeles' to travel, issued by the totalitarian government known as the Sphinx. Outside these cities, deserts prevail, and shanty towns house non-citizens without IDs living primitive lives. The film follows William Geld (Tim Robbins), a family man who works as a government investigator sent to Shanghai to solve a case of fake IDs. He meets Maria Gonzales (Samantha Morton), falls in love with her despite knowing she's behind the forgeries, and they share a wild, passionate affair lasting only as long as his visa. The film explores themes of identity, forbidden love, and the consequences of defying oppressive systems.
