Synopsis

In the small, conservative Scottish village of Benncleuch, a naive young woman named Bess McNeil (Emily Watson) marries Jan Nyman (Stellan Skarsgård), a Danish oil-rig worker. After their marriage, Jan returns to his rig, promising to come back soon. Alone and lonely, Bess prays fervently for God to bring him home safely. Jan suffers a severe neck injury in an accident aboard the rig and returns permanently paralyzed. Unable to have sexual relations with Bess, Jan convinces her to take lovers and describe the encounters to him as a way to cope with his condition and give him a reason to live. As Bess's sexual behavior becomes more deviant, she comes to believe that her actions are guided by God and will help Jan recover. However, the community turns against them, and eventually, Bess is excommunicated from the church for her sins.
