Synopsis

Oberst Redl is a historical drama film directed by István Szabó in 1985. The movie follows the life of Alfred Redl (played by Klaus Maria Brandauer), a Czech officer serving in the Austro-Hungarian Army during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Redl rises through the ranks due to his intelligence, loyalty, and charm, becoming chief of staff under Emperor Franz Joseph I. However, as he climbs the social ladder, he begins to struggle with his secret homosexual life, which puts him at risk during a time of strict societal norms.
