Synopsis
In 1856, Alexina Barbin arrives in a coastal village in La Rochelle to teach young girls, having lived previously with nuns at an orphanage school. Deeply religious and mysterious about her gender, Alexina shares a classroom and bedroom with the lively Sara, whom she falls in love with. Their relationship evolves into a scandalous affair. Seeking marriage and social acceptance, Alexina confides her secrets to various authority figures including the village priest, her mother, the bishop, and the bishop's physician. Following the church and court's ruling on her petition, marrying Sara becomes Alexina's sole purpose and hope.
