In 'Moscow on the Hudson', a Russian circus visits New York City. Among the performers are two friends: a clown named Slava and his saxophone-playing companion, Vladimir. When their tour ends, Vladimir decides to defect while performing in Bloomingdales. He is befriended by the department store's black security guard, Lionel. Vladimir falls in love with an Italian immigrant coworker, Maria, who works behind the perfume counter. With Lionel's help, Vladimir navigates his new life in America, working various jobs and pursuing a career as a musician.
