The story begins with Gérard Morere, a 25-year-old Parisian student, who becomes obsessed with finding a treasure that Troilus lost at sea during the Peloponnesian War. He believes he knows its location near the island of Levezzi due to a discovery he made five years prior while diving. With investments from friends and an innkeeper, Gérard travels to Tangiers where he convinces Erick, a cigarette smuggler, to take him to Levezzi. Upon arrival, Gérard meets Manina, the light-keeper's beautiful and pure 18-year-old daughter. While Erick is initially skeptical of Gérard's intentions, Gérard's belief in the treasure compels patience. The film follows their daily dives for the treasure and nightly romances with Manina.
