In 1922 Quebec, Claudine Perreault has raised her son François with the intention of him becoming a priest to gain God's forgiveness for their illegitimate child status. However, François rebels against this plan at age 17. In a fit of rage, Claudine strikes him severely on the head, causing him to lose his hearing. After Claudine's death, François begins a relationship with Amica, a young woman he buys from an Innu peddler.
