A warrior father leaves his family to fight in the Hundred Years' War between France and England. He entrusts his young son François with a sword to protect their mother's virtue. Upon discovering his mother's infidelity, François becomes traumatized and guilty, harboring enmity towards her. Years later, François returns from war as a hardened knight after being held captive by the English. Plagued by memories of his mother's past actions, he begins abusing those around him, including his own children Béatrice and her younger brother. Béatrice, innocent and loving, suffers greatly under his tyranny. The film focuses on Béatrice's fate and whether she will rise up against her father or succumb to his destruction.
