In Osijek, Yugoslavia-1968, 17-year-old Tomo is considered the great hope for his city in an upcoming junior rowing cup, which Chairman Tito himself is scheduled to open. However, Tomo's main interest lies elsewhere - he's obsessed with girls but has no luck with them. Due to a physical handicap that he even hides from doctors, Tomo ends up in hospital. Local political figures pressure him to row despite his condition, and the situation becomes even more unbearable when his father is arrested on the eve of the cup due to perceived political suspicions. Throughout this turmoil, Tomo's life is significantly influenced by a beautiful prostitute nicknamed 'The Queen of the Night', who introduces him to manhood.
Set against the backdrop of Osijek in Yugoslavia-1968, Branko Schmidt's drama 'Kraljica noci' (2001) explores themes of pressure, expectations, and self-discovery through the lens of a young man named Tomo. The film focuses on Tomo's struggle with his physical disability and societal expectations, particularly those surrounding the upcoming junior rowing cup. It also delves into Tomo's coming-of-age experiences, largely influenced by his interactions with 'The Queen of the Night', a local prostitute who becomes something of a mentor to him.
