Synopsis
In 18th century Denmark, British princess Caroline (Alicia Vikander) finds herself married to King Christian VII (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard), who turns out to be mentally unstable and emotionally distant. Feeling isolated in her new life at the royal court, she becomes close with German doctor Johann Struensee (Mads Mikkelsen), who initially gains Christian's trust by treating his supposed illness. Together, they begin implementing Enlightenment reforms under Christian's name, earning Struensee significant influence over the king and Caroline's affection. Their secret affair spirals into a dangerous game of power politics when conservative factions at court catch wind of their relationship, threatening not just their romance but also the progressive reforms they've worked so hard to establish.
