During a cold winter night in Copenhagen, private detective Hamse Leth finds himself amidst a mid-life crisis while attending his former fiancée's wedding. Struggling to find meaning in his life and confronted by the cultural restrict rules of Scandinavian society, especially the Jante Law culture of equality and sameness, Hamse begins to deconstruct his own character through the lens of Shakespeare's 'Hamlet'. Throughout the night, Hamse's mental and physical worlds are inhabited by six characters: his partner, Jewish mother, ex-fiancée, a mysterious girl, and a prostitute. Each character challenges him with his uneasiness towards the Jante Law culture. By investigating these characters' flaws and contradictions, Hamse ultimately finds clues to understanding his role in Scandinavian society.
Cold Night (2019) is a Danish-Brazilian-Namibian film directed by André Costa that blends drama, comedy, and mystery. Set against the backdrop of Copenhagen's cold winter night, the film follows private detective Hamse Leth as he grapples with his role in Scandinavian society and confronts the cultural restrict rules, particularly the Jante Law principle of 'you are not special.' The story is loosely based on Shakespeare's 'Hamlet,' with Hamse deconstructing his character through this literary lens.
